Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Independence public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Museum and Sports Park Sales
Staff continue working through the sale processes for the museum building and sports park with the respective purchasers.
Urban Renewal Agency performance and debt
Tax increment revenue has grown more slowly than projected after big investments like Independence Landing, so the agency is focusing on paying down roughly $18.6 million in debt rather than funding new projects. The adopted budget directs nearly all $1.6 million to debt service through FY 2045-46.
City services fee of ~$30/month to close budget shortfall
The city's library, parks and museum are running at 'life support' levels, and current growth isn't keeping up with revenue needs. The committee is recommending a roughly $30 monthly fee on utility bills — itemized as public safety ($10), parks (~$8) and community services (~$12) — to shore up the general fund.
City-state Lawmaker Dispute
Independence officials are trying to put distance between the city and the state lawmaker who represents the area. The spat matters because it could complicate how well local residents are represented at the state level.
